Preparing for Lent

No Gravatar

For a while now I’ve been getting this idea in my head that it would be a good idea to fast from the internet. I have mostly blown this off as that seems difficult for me since I practically breath the internet.

But for Lent, I’m going to give it a shot. 46 days w/o internet (I figure if I use the interweb on Sundays it will be rather difficult to stop again on Monday).

The skinny kid is joining in on this.

The plan is as follows:

Work related internet is OK, and suggested since I could possibly lose my job without it.
Email must be downloaded by a client (i.e. thunderbird) to avoid the web browser. Email is kinda must since most people seem to communicate through it now days.
No IMing people….that means you Carlson.
Sermons must be downloaded via a podcast or by my wife. (It seems like a bad idea to stop listening to new sermons)
No tweaking my website or anything like that even if it is for educational purposes.

If you are fasting from something for Lent and wanted to spend a little of that time praying for me here is what I’m having faith and believing in God for during this time.
1. That I could learn to more completely find my affirmation in Him and not other people
2. That Lauren would find a agent or publisher for her book.

I’m not telling you all this to be all spiritual sounding or something, but because I want you to understand that I will not be reading any blogs or anything like that, and so that if you see me on the IM or something to tell you that you should yell at me.

Zelda….Again & New Friend Code

No Gravatar

I started a new game in zelda again. It is a little less annoying during the training mode because I don’t have to think much, just run through it. I’m an hour in and have just turned into the wolf. I’m wondering how long it will take me to get my green tunic, sword, and shield this time.

Also, all my mii’s are gone. Copying them from the controller to the wii only allows me to have them there, not edit them or set them to a favorite status or anything.

And, my friends code has changed…confirming they shipped me a completely new Wii, which means I have to re-register the serial number.

Anyway, here is my friends code…please if you want me to add you post a link to your post with your friends code in the comments so I can systematically get them all down again.

And the Terrorism Continues…

Now they are trying to take away our “death from above” factor.

We’re in trouble here. We need a braincell trust meeting to discuss a response to this issue and to finalize the new 07 nickname list for the Chang.

Tale of Wii Woe

As some of you know, I had an issue with my wii that kept me from logging into the Wii Shop channel (store where you buy old games and download stuff like the web browser). Mostly it didn’t bug me that much since it didn’t effect me playing games.

But, I know at some point (read when they release Mario Kart 64…which they did like a week ago) I was going to want to be able to get on the shopping channel. So, I researched this issue, and it turns out that it is some odd tandem internet/memory card bug, that prevents me from saving my saved games out to my memory card and then just exchanging the thing for a new one (which Nintendo is happy to do btw, they will even allow you to wait until you receive your new one before sending back your old one, and they give you postage to send the old one back). This actually requires me shipping the whole thing back, having it repaired, and being without it for a couple of weeks round trip.

Well, it turns out that I’ve been super busy at work since the new year started, so I decided that a good time to send it back was when I’d be at my most busy (this week is that week btw, so I actually sent it back a little early).

I hadn’t quite finished Zelda yet, but I was 45 hrs into it and at the last castle. But I was about 5 or 6 hearts away from maxing out my life bar, and still had lots of bugs to collect, so I decided to not beat the game before sending it back. I’m also pro level in bowling and have a high score recorded at 247.

I received my Wii back yesterday. In it was a note stating that my saved games, settings, and just about everything in general was unrecoverable, and they pretty much replaced my entire Wii. So I wasted 2+ weeks without my Wii, lost 45 hrs of an uncompleted zelda game, and now have to rebowl 9 strikes in a row to get my high score back.

I was gonna eventually play through zelda a second time anyway, cuz it is just a fantastic game. But i wasn’t particularly in the mood to do it any time soon. Now, just to see the ending (which I hear is excellent) I have to replay the WHOLE FREAKING THING!!! I’m sure I can do it faster a second time, but still, it is very frustrating.

To make matters worse, I left the A/V cables at a friends house last time I was there and I still don’t have them back, so I still can’t play the thing.

For all you Narutards

This week was the last episode (episode 220) of the Naruto series. The new series starting with some new Naruto Something type of name airs on the 15th in Japan.

In my opinion the last 4 episode filler arc wasn’t too bad and is totally worth checking out. It starts on 217, and is a nice cap-off of the first series.

And, if this new series is as good as the manga is right now, I think we are going to be in for a treat that far surpasses anything in the old series when they were young.

As usual Dattebayo is going to be the place to get Naruto stuff quickly.

Does it really matter that the Bears lost the Superbowl?

If you would indulge me, I would like to take a moment for a bit of serious reflection on the impact of the events that conspired in Miami yesterday as it relates to my life.

SuperBowl Sadness

The food and beer was excellent…definitely money well spent on all that.

Everything else makes me want to cry.

Touchdown Jesus, you failed me. Perhaps I should believe in a different football deity.

Touchdown Ganesha? Touchdown Budda?

I never should have believed in a deity that resides in Notre Dame. I hate Notre Dame. I should have known you would screw Chicago despite our grain sacrifices. Just like the school Notre Dame does.

SuperBowl Prayer

Dear Football Loving Touchdown Jesus.

We thank you O’ Lord for blessing this season with a superbowl appearance for the mighty monsters of the midway. We humble ourselves before you by not consuming grain alcohol before noon on this O’ holy day. And we remove our orange “C” encrusted caps during your divinely inspired national anthem and Chicago fight songs.

Wondrous and mighty touchdown Jesus, please protect our beloved team from your beloved town, which is known for its polish sausage, who’s name starts with a “C”, ends in an “O” and has a “hicag” in the middle.

And we repent of our unbelief after Walter retiring and the firing of Ditka. We wavered in the absence of your mighty warrior of the sacred touchdown and the Superbowl Moses of the this great city on the lake. We know now that you were testing us and were growing our character by keeping us from the promised land of an 80’s dynasty, and you were rising up a new prophet for your army of first-downs. We thank you and praise your holy name for keeping us from our own pride.

Firey lord of miraculous come-backs, we pray in your name against the spirit of awesome that Peyton Manning sold his soul for. We know that he could never have defeated Tom Brady, Bill Belichik, and the rest of the Patriots, and displayed the ability to not choke in an AFC title game without selling something to the dark lord. We pray that you take back that territory for your name by allowing Brian Urlacher to wield the sword of justice in the form of a mighty sack to remove his pride from him.

Compassionate one who claps for injured players who walk off the field, we pray that you bless our compatriots who have gone to see you prior to witness this greats of moments 21 years in the making.

For yours is the league, the salary cap, and tithe from ad revenues forever,

Amen

Great Ideas

Great article. Great point. I wish sabbaticals were a required thing every three years or something. That would be sweet. I think it is cool that some people go take time to think. Like John Piper takes each summer off to write. What a great idea.

I should take more time to push ideas to fruition. I have a couple swimming in my head that I think might be worthwhile down the stretch.

Interesting, podcasts to help you learn new languages and keep up with international news in that language.

Check it out if you get the chance.

Edit:

This is a portal for a ton of learning online podcasts.

Apparently there is one on the Byzantine Empire that is very popular on there.
