Weekend Plans of Nerdiness

This weekend I need to relax and rest, because I have been sick. So I was thinking what would be better to do with that time than install software. I mean, it takes a long time to install an operating system, most of that time could be spent napping. Then when you wake up, something is done, and you feel accomplished with just a little effort prior to napping.

So, I figure I want to get a linux distribution up and running on my old computer. I know I have an old copy of FreeBSD on it right now, but I have new plans for it.

I’m downloading Fedora Core 4, and I’m going to run Zimbra on top if it, to see if it would be a good thing for the church to use, and so I can expand my linux horizons.

This will go on my old machine (my old Cyrix 333 MHz computer that I used to drop kick and it would make funny noises like a whining dog). I may also install Church Ledger, a Church Management System (CMS), as well if Zimbra doesn’t bog it down by itself.

I think if I can get both of these to run simultaneously on one computer, and get that computer to handle our basic webpage I could consolidate email, church databases, and our basic web stuff into one cheap box. That would be really nice, and would save money.

On my old hard drive I think I’m going to install Ubuntu Linux, and dual boot my main desktop. Maybe force myself to not turn on windows for a while, and see how I would fare. I’m thinking it wouldn’t be to bad with all the linux ports of software like GAIM for IMing, and Firefox and Open Office.

Anyway, I’m due for my two year linux kick, where I try to install it and make all my hardware work, only to get frustrated and forget about it for another year or so. I’m hoping this time will be better since I’m not trying to build a FreeVo box, so there won’t be any tricky hardware.

More later on if it works out or not.
