So today I noticed that there was an icon on the bottom of my screen indicating a link to a news feed while I was checking my Gmail. I click on it, it allows me to add a “live bookmark” (like I talked about before) to my gmail account. Then live bookmark appears in my bookmark bar, I click on it, and low and behold the unread mail subjects appear.
Just one more reason firefox is awesome….it has all the features of a news reader /aggregator that I would use, built right into my browser….no more trillian plugin necessary.
Again, if you don’t understand what a “Live Bookmark” is, check out this page, explaining how they work.
Seriously….everyone should get this now…it is so easy to use, and set up, has tabbed browsing, the best feature you never knew you couldn’t live without, pop-up blocking with site specific settings, and live bookmarks. Even Jeff, the never-adopter, should just download this without seeing it on my computer because it is that cool and easy to use. And you don’t have to run Ad-aware as often since almost no one attacks this browser and it is more secure anyway. Dave Lin also approves….so all nerd must unite and force our non-nerd friends who have gmail accounts to switch to a better browser, and take back the web.

I’m kinda dumb and slow, so it’s no wonder I don’t know this, but why exactly is tabbed browsing useful? Bob says that it has to do with memory and not wanting a gazillion windows open, but I have two screens and a fast computer and I can Alt Tab and Ctrl Tab like crazy so maybe that is why I am not getting it. I do use Firefox and have since Version 0.8 was available because I support freeware and open source. Now I have the 1.0 preview release, and it’s swell. I love the Google toolbar (although I had the Google toolbar/pop-up blocker with IE before, so that’s not what makes it super cool to me) and I love not having to run Spybot much (I use it instead of Ad-Aware).
I also also am wondering about something else that I was used to with Netscape and IE that I don’t have with Firefox. When I’m looking at something, and I want to leave that open and also click on a link I would “Open in new window.” That would leave me with what I wanted open. Maybe I am daft, but how do I do that without opening a new window (or a new tab) and then cutting and pasting the address of where I am into the new one and then clicking on from there. New tabs and windows open to nowhere for me. I know there is an “open location” option at the top which I suspect is meant to help with the same thing, but it never works for me. I am probably daft and this is probably totally obvious, but is there a way to do what I want?

yet another reason it is cool: you can install it without having administrative privileges on your computer.
awesome. i love finding software that just doesn’t give a crap to the whole privileges thing for users. sometimes i fall into thinking that it’s a game to try and find software that i can install without calling IT.

it is actually really easy to install it to a memory key as well, it only takes a few tweaks and it will run directly from the key, no registry entries, no uninstall options…just run it on any computer right off of any removable media….how cool is that?

You gotta be kidding.
I’m gonna have to play with that feature.Wow. I wonder if Opera can do that? [Note: I am still a loyal Opera user.]

ok, i looked at the page and it says that a live bookmark is a really good way to get RSS news (really super special news? rarely suspected of simplicity news? robert shimmin senior news?). also, I’m living quite fine without a trillian adaptor, i’ve never heard of a news reader, and i thank tabbed browsing must be a way of trying a lot of different beers on tap.
mmmm, beer. maybe i will try it.

LOL
good stuff
really simple site syndication might work as well…but it is a good time no matter what.

I’m confused…you can right click on any link and open it in a new tab or window…I think there is a way to hold a key and click something for it to open in a new window or tab. I know there is a tweak you can add to force all links that would normally open in a new window (target=”new” kind of thing) in tabs instead…but I’m not sure what you are getting at. Also, if you have the preview release you should download the final, it has bug fixes in it.

Maybe I have been experiencing a bug… I shall download the final and see if it is better.

Been using firefox for a couple of weeks now. I like it. It is more user-friendly, especially on a laptop, but it’s not that big a deal.
I think the excitement is more over having an alternative to Microsoft that’s as good as Microsoft rather than any added features or anything.
